Well Travelled: Nova Scotia, Canada.

For our latest Well Travlled we bring you, Kealan Shilling. Kealan Shilling was born and grew up on the North Shore of Massachusetts in a small town called Marblehead. Chasing dreams of snow, surf, and a rambling roadside, Kerouac inspired life; at age 18 he hit the road and never looked back. Ride along with Kealan as he ventures off on a surf trip to Nova Scotia, Canada with professional surfer, Dean Petty.

Dean Found His Long Lost Friend

It is always interesting trying to find time to do work on the road

Especially when wondering around Nova Scotia

We searched for the perfect surf

The endless fields and adventures lead us to some amazing spots

Found some swell just down the way

Dean surfed until dawn

Our friends came out to watch

We stayed in this rustic house that looked like it was going to topple over

From there we would drive for hours searching for new breaks

Equipt to rip

The landscapes in Nova Scotia are amazing

And so is the surf…

Wet and cold seal-looking human

I could explore this area for months

In the morning we would check the swell & drink coffee

Testing his toes on the nose

Surfing camp fires were essential…

…To stay warm for sunset sessions

The view from our rickety old house was insanely beautiful

Reviewing the work captured

Herschel Supply: W5&H – Chris Burkard

Herschel Supply W5&H

Already a Senior Staff Photographer at twenty-six, Chris Burkard was quick to carve a name for himself in Action Sports photography. Read about Chris below…

1. Who are you?

I am Chris Burkard.. central California native, and bodysurf enthusiast..and love of the outdoors..

2. What do you do?

I am a senior staff photographer for surfer magazine… I shoot a lot of outdoor lifestyle, adventure, and tomfoolery for outdoor brands.. but I’m most known for my editorial style and landscape perspective.

3. Where do you live?

The small beach town of Pismo Beach.. its’ more known for clam chowder and sand dunes than perfect waves.

4. When are you most productive?

In the cold climates of the North Atlantic.. I have never been content with sipping down pina coladas in the south pacific.. and in some way I get a sick sense of accomplishment freezing my but off chasing elusive waves in freezing and remote places.

5. Why photography?

For me, photography just became the most perfect medium for expression, it honestly made the most sense.. I did a lot of art through high school , drawing, clay, paint.. but I hated being tied to a classroom or stuck with and easel on a cliff.. I wanted to be apart of the action.. so photography made the most sense.. it was like a perfect extension of my body.. I could take it in the surf, the mountains, and pretty much anywhere in between.

6. How did you get your start?

My first passion was for shooting landscapes.. that was all I cared about.. so when I first started I went to the desert southwest and just explored.. I eventually combined my passion for being in the water and bought a waterhousings and started shooting friends surfing.. I was sending images to Transworld Surf, and I had a photo editor that gave me some great feedback.. Eventually I was offered an internship.. and the rest is history.. I learned a lot from that experience.. it really made me think hard about how to actually contribute to magazines.. so I started tailoring my work towards editorial..and it made me think in terms of telling the story.

W5&H: Mikey LeBlanc Interview

Herschel Supply W5&H

Mikey LeBlanc was once a professional Snowboarder and now co-founder of Holden Outerwear. Below are Mikey’s words on life and such, straight from the heart.

1. Who are you? I have no idea. Really.

2. What do you do? First and foremost, try and spread love.

I work for and co-founded/ co-own HOLDEN Outerwear.

I handle marketing, and like most small businesses many more things day to day.

I enjoy, snowboarding, photos, bike rides, good conversation, etc.

3. Where do you live? VENICE, CA, USA, PLANET EARTH

4. When are you most productive? When I act freely, and I don’t resist any part of the situation at hand.

5. Why outerwear? We make eco-friendlier clothes to keep people feeling good, warm and stylely.

6. How did you get your start? My Mom and Dad this time around. At work I started as a professional snowboarder with an idea to make outerwear that looked like what we wanted to wear every day, and functioned exceptionally well. No one was making gear that transitioned from the MTN to the Street, thats why HOLDEN was a necessity. Before that came skateboarding, which exposed me to so many things, art, music, style, freedom.

Herschel Supply W5&H

Long time member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Raekwon is a legend in rap music. Creating music for over 20 years, Raekwon is know world wide as an innovator and is said to be one of the pioneers of the Mafioso rap. Recently Raekwon stopped by the Herschel Supply Office in Vancouver. We had the chance to sit down with him for a W5&H, read about Raekwon below…

Yo I am Raekwan, what’s good.

2. What do you do?

I rhyme for a living you know what I mean I have been in the game for 20 years, a legend. I get a lot of money and I love pretty women.

3. Where do you live?

I live on the land you know, I live everywhere I go it’s like I try to get a place there but right now I stay in Toronto. I stay between Toronto and New york. I got a place in California, I got a place in Atlanta; where my kids is at. They got the best place but you know but you gotta love everyone. I just got a place in Jersey too, I got like five places.

4. When are you most productive?

I am most productive when I am high you know what I mean. When I am out there creating my music, it is all about the ambiance. Weed is a stimulant that helps me be creative, but still I am a business man. I am sharp; it helps me to relax. I am more sharper when I am relaxed and in my zone so it’s always good to have a joint around.

5. Why music?

Music is the key to life, you know what I mean? Music makes the mind settle, music is beautiful, it is the language of today. It represents struggle, it represents your ego, it represents you loving to just enjoy music to take a break from everything.

6. How did you get your start?

What started it all was just a conversation, a phone call to come down to the studio. We was trying to make a record, we was representing Staten Island. That was what we originally wanted to do. We recieved a call and we were excited because it was something to represent where we came from and if we didn’t make that decision we wouldn’t be here today as Wu-Tang Clan.
